My wife and I moved here in November 2018 and decided to purchase a home in Mesa De Malanquin. As with many who to do the same we felt compelled to make the appropriate changes to make it our own. Our choice of contractors was Michael with Quality Custom Builders for a variety of reasons. First and foremost our Spanish is not great and he being from the US made communication easy. He understood we had a certain budget to work with and were in need of multiple changes to what we felt was already a very nice single family home to put our stamp on it to enjoy for years to come. Scope of work: We added a large balcony off our master bedroom which also created a very comfortable “shaded” seating area under that addition. This was not a simple process as there was a large garden area that occupied the space under the balcony we wanted built out. After the demolition of the garden area Michael designed a beautiful multi-purpose seating area under the balcony with seating for about 8 people as well as electric for custom lighting. Next came the rooftop deck. The entire rooftop (which is a large space) was completely re-engineered from countertops to built in seating to Pergola to a 12’ x 12’ additional room that now acts as our personal gym. All areas of the rooftop were designed to perfection with not only aesthetics but functionality as an overlying consideration. In addition to the rooftop Michael and his team coordinated a complete re-paint of the entire property as well as additional engineering of other areas as was needed. All lighting in the entire home was changed as well by Michael’s master electrician. Modifications were made to our casita as well which acts as my office and for lack of better term “man cave”. Cabinets and additional storage were added to make the space more functional and aesthetically pleasing. Michaels team was punctual as well as courteous. They worked long days and we always felt that we were well taken care of an our job was as important to us as it was to them. The work came in on budget and on time which is sometimes highly uncommon in Mexico. That being said I highly recommend Michael and Quality custom builders for all your home improvement needs and am happy to share any photographs of the work they did with anyone who is in need of reassurance. I recently purchased a home in San Miguel, with the intention of making a number of major renovations. I set out to find an architect/builder who could translate my expectations into a design and a work plan. Unfortunately, this process did not go smoothly. To begin with, it was difficult to find someone who would be specific, both in terms of costs and in terms of design. When I did find someone who appeared to be professional, this appearance faded quickly. The original cost proposal was little more than a launching pad from which to constantly increase costs. I terminated the services of the person who had a poor grasp of the meaning of a cost estimate. This caused me to have to initiate the process of finding a competent architect/builder all over again. Happily, this turned out quite well. A mutual friend introduced me to Michael Townsend, whom I selected to complete the renovations of my home. The collaboration with Michael has gone very well. Michael has several qualities that make working with him a pleasure. To begin with, he listens carefully when I explain the changes I want, and he asks the kinds of questions that make me confident he understands what I am seeking. He then generates a cost proposal that possesses two qualities that are not common in San Miguel: it is detailed, and it is authentic. To date, he has always operated within the bounds of the estimates that he laid out before beginning work. Michael is truly detail-oriented, and he does an admirable job of seeing that all the renovations are done to high expectations. In addition, he takes pride in his work. There have been times when he has inspected things that his workers did in the past, and then decided that some touchups are needed. He does this without being asked, and without submitting additional bills. I am sure that there will be times in the future when I will want to do more work on my home. When that time comes, I will look forward to working with Michael again.

Michael did a great deal of reasearch about how to install planters that would leave no standing water of soil on our rooftop and connected the discharge system to our drains that were already installed. The purpose of this letter is to recommend Michael owner of Quality Custom Builders, to be your sole contractor for your house to be built or modified in San Miguel de Allende. My wife and I purchased a home he built in 2016 in the El Paraiso subdivision. He handled every detail in its construction professionally and in fluent English or Spanish, as he is bi-lingual. He listened to our ideas and made suggestions for improving on them as we worked through its construction. He has an architect who renders drawings for him to show how our ideas might look. He is very conscientious and supervises his workers well. They return his loyalty to them in their turning out quality work. Once we took possession of the house he built he stood behind all of his work by making whatever changes we found we needed. His efforts were well executed and all remnants were cleaned up before anyone left for the day. We found his workers to be alert and willing to work hard to please him and us. Even when completed he stands by his work and guarantees his work for the next year or so, depending on the nature of the item to be resolved. We have always found him pleasant and willing to work with us to ensure a quality home. We have lived in SMA since 2004 ,while my wife is actually from SMA. She and I have had a raft of experiences with various contractors/architects over this period as we built and re-built houses using other contractors. None have come close to the quality of work performed as we found in Michael. We enthusiastically recommend him for whatever type of construction you may need. We are willing to answer any questions you may have about his work as well as show you our house he completed on time and on budget.
